Діялося це взимку. Ішов Кожум'яка рано на зорі з відром до Дунаю. Дивиться і бачить: лисиця б'ється на льоду. Ближче, ближче, лисиця в прорубі впіймала велику щуку. Та щука вхопила лисицю за нижню щелепу, лисиця щуку — за верхню, й так моцуються — силами міряються. Кожум'яка прикрався й — чирк! — вхопив лисицю, а з нею і щуку. Взяв, несе і думає: «Понесу чудо до короля Матяша. Він такого не видів ніколи, певно, обдарує ще мене!»
Не довго думав і пішов до царських палат. «Кажуть, до цього короля легко можна дістатися!» — говорить сам собі. Та виявилося, що і не так легко. На перших дверях королівський охоронець зупинив Кожум'яку: — Куди? – питає його. — До короля! – каже Кожум`яка. — Для чого? — Несу подарунок! — і показав лисицю та щуку. — Добре! Я тебе пущу, та половина нагороди буде моя. — Най буде й так! І охоронець пропустив Кожум'яку.
Йде Кожум'яка далі. Дійшов до других дверей. А тут знову: — Куди? — До короля! — Для чого? — Несу дарунок королеві! — і показав лисицю та щуку. — Добре! Я тебе пропущу, та половину нагороди заділиш мені. — Най буде й так. І охоронець пропустив Кожум'яку. «Но,— думає Кожум'яка,— мені нічого не залишиться».
Прийшов він до короля Матяша. — Що нового? — питає король. — Я приніс вам дарунок. Король подивився, засміявся, наказав покласти лисицю й щуку до музею, а чоловікові дати сто золотих. Кожум'яка покрутив головою. — Що, тобі не любиться? – питає король. — Подаруйте мені, прошу вас, лиш п'ятдесят палиць!.. — Чому? — дивується король. — Я дуже люблю палиці! — Коли любиш, то іди до лісу, вирубай собі, скільки хочеш палиць! — Та не такі... На задню частину!.. — Но, коли твоя просьба така, то дістанеш палиці! — промовив король і наказав слугам відлічити в нагороду чоловікові п'ятдесят палиць.
Ведуть Кожум'яку, а Матяш — за ним. Як підійшли до охоронця, Кожум'яка став. Охоронець простягнув руку. — Ходи, брате, зі мною на уряд, де платять,— сказав Кожум'яка. Коли прийшли до другого охоронця, і той простяг долоню. — Ходи, брате, зі мною туди, де платять, дістанеш свою половину. Слуги, які вели Кожум'яку, вже діло зрозуміли. Як прийшли на місце, говорить Кожум'яка: — Мою нагороду прошу поділити на дві рівні частини, половину цьому, половину — тому. Я так обіцяв їм.
Матяш на дверях озвався: — Я нагороду подвоюю! Дайте їм по п'ятдесят! І відлічили по п'ятдесят палиць одному охоронцеві і другому. Король Матяш прогнав їх, бо не хотів, щоб такі були при його дворі.. А Кожум'яці каже: — Раз я подвоїв нагороду їм, даю подвійно і тобі.— І замість ста золотих дав Кожум'яці цілих двісті.
