Одного разу вийшов їжак з свої нори подивитися на божий світ. Було то так під осінній час, у неділю. І що він собі погадав: «Піду я у поле роздивитися, як виглядає гречка і пшениця!» І пішов. Задумав собі: «Аби коротшою дорогою іти, то піду навправець». Але поза корчем здибав його заєць, що обзирав капусту, чи велика виросла. — «Ого-го! — каже їжак.— Скоре сотворіния тут!» — «А ти,— каже заєць,— такий твій рід віддавна, і ти такий! Загинеш з твоїм ходом і з твоїми кривулями, з твоїми кривими ногами!» Але їжака найдужче то узлостило, що він каже, що криві ноги. — «Ти,— каже,— мене береш на сміх? Адже як ти такий великий пан, то заложімся, хто кого переможе у бігу». І заклалися у п'ять дукатів... І каже заєць: — «Ану, біжім». — «Ні,— каже,— іще ні. Я піду ще додому і скажу жінці, аби знала, де я пішов». А заєць був тому рад, бо був голоден, і думає собі: «І це мені добре буде, бо попоїм капусти, то зможу ліпше бігати».
Приходить їжак до свої нори і каже жінці: — «Знаєш, жінко, маю клопіт». — «Який?» Каже: — «Заложив-сми ся з зайцем, хто кого переможе у бігу». Та й геть уже розказує за той заклад. — «А ти мой здурів, чи що? Що ти ся кладеш до зайця у бігу?» — «Мовчи, жінко,— каже їжак,— якось то буде. Ми мусимо виграти тих п'ять дукатів... Збирайся, жінко, і ходи зо мною разом». Ідуть вони разом, а по дорозі їжак учить жінку, що має робити. Каже: — «Ми зараз там приходимо на ниву, і я тебе поставлю у сім кінці, у борозні, і ти маєш на сім місці стояти. Наколи прибіжить д'тобі, так ти маєш казати: «Я вже тут!» А прийде він у тот другий кінець д'мені, то я так само скажу: «Я вже тут!»
Приходить він д'зайцеві і каже: — «Ну, я,— каже,— уже готовий». Поставали вони у кінець ниви, і заєць каже: — «Маємо бігти на команду; на команду раз, два, три маємо ураз зачинати бігти». — «Добре». І станув заєць у одну борозну, а їжак у другу; і на команду раз, два, три рушили до бігу. Заєць біжить, що сили має, у другий кінець ниви, а їжак зостався на місці. Прибігає заєць у кінець ниви, а там каже їжачиха: — «Я уже тут!» —«Агі,— каже заєць,— та аби таке помело, аби мене перебігало?! Ану, пробуймо ще раз!» Заєць скочив знов до бігу. Прибігає у кінець ниви, а їжак ся підоймив догори і каже: — «Гов-гов! Я уже тут давно чекаю!» — «Агі! Ану, біжім ще раз!» Прибігає у другий кінець, а то знов є там їжак [а то була їжачиха].
Так бігав він дев'ятьдесять і дев'ять рази, а за сотним разом як попробував бігти, кілько сили мав, як ся помоцував, та й насеред ниви — трісь!
Отак ся скінчила справа їжака з зайцем.
