Один чоловік якось украв у другого капусту. Той пішов жалітися у розправу, каже, що Ліщим украв капусту. Прийшов і Ліщим у розправу і одказується, що не брав капусти. А у розправі був зборщик податів, він їм і каже: — От я узнаю вора; беріть ви пояс і йдіть у сіни, а я візьму другий кінець, перекину через двері і буду отсюда тягнуть. Всі ухватились за пояс і держаться, а зборщик кричить: — Узялися усі? — Уже, узялися! — Та, кажеться, не усі взялися?— опять кричить зборщик податів. — Усі узялися!— кричать ті за дверима. — А той, що капусту украв, хіба узявся?— кричить зборщик. — Та й я узявся,— кричить Ліщим. — А як і ти узявся, то заплати за капусту, а ні — оддай капусту тому, що ти украв у його,— каже зборщик.
Той злякався, не знав, що й казать, і говорить, що помилився. А тоді, часа через два, признався. Пішли вони всі у шинок, випили могоричу і помирились. І досі споминають люди хитрого зборщика.
